It is still usable as is (although it is delicate). Closed, the comb measures about 3 1 2" long. I see a lot of this exact comb being dug up on eastern front battle fields. As far as I am concerned, these are the comb of the the German soldier even if it wasn't an official issued item. I can understand why so many men would have chosen this one,
