『COTTON』は写真集である。ただし、背景には政治的・社会的な物語を含む。私はある小さな黒人教会に立ち寄り、宗教の支配力や逞しい女性たちを強調するために２枚を用いた。何ヘクタールにも広がる綿花畑よりも、多数の小さな段ボール箱にその痕跡を見た。最後に収録したベンチに座る５人の少年たちの写真は、この地方に生じた、しばしば隔離されていた余暇のありようを象徴しているように思える。カメラはいわば、無意識のリトマス試験だ。モノクロフィルムという試験紙を用い、人種差別の辛酸を検出している。
