The protein also stimulates insulin synthesis and secretion in response to glucose and enhances the expression of several pancreatic beta-cell transcription factors

Mutations in this gene are the cause of several cardiomyopathies and keratodermas| including skin fragility-woolly hair syndrome

but their biological validity has not been determined
