Edetate, a heavy metal antagonist, chelates divalent and trivalent metals, forming soluble stable complexes that are easily excreted by the kidneys, so they can be used to reduce serum calcium concentrations. Furthermore, this agent exerts a negative inotropic effect on the heart through a
